How is your child doing? National Curriculum levels :-
You should be given your child's level every year from yr1 to 9 (if not contact the school).
At the end of each key stage (years 2, 6 and 9) the levels are awarded mainly by external SATS exams taken by all state school children (and often by private school children)
Levels in years 1,3,4,7 and 8 are awarded based on school assessments.
Yr 5 results are also school based and are in the form of a 'trial' test prior to the important yr6 SATS.
Approximate National Curriculum levels in the core subjects, Maths, English and Science are given below :-

SATS and their importance
KS1 results can give early signs of educational problems.
KS2 results are often used by secondary schools for setting the new yr7 intake classes.( May)
KS3 results are often used for setting yr10 GCSE classes. (May)
Lower Secondary School
The core subjects (Maths, English and Science) are taken by all students up to yr11. Other subjects are introduced in yr7 such as RE, PE, Geography, History, Modern Language(s), Music/Drama, Technology subjects etc. By the end of yr9 pupils choose option subjects to be added to the core subjects to start the 2 year GCSE courses.
GCSE
Setting of classes is often based on yr9 attainment in SATS and/or school based exams.
As a general guide only there are 2 or 3 tiers of limited grade courses for each subject.
2 tiers :-
Higher - A* to C grades - 50% of pupils and ...............................................Foundation - C to G - 50% of pupils
3 tiers :-
Higher - A* to C -10% most able pupils..Intermediate - B to D - 80% of pupils...Foundation - C to G - 10% of pupils
Most subjects contain an essential coursework component, which have submission deadlines. Many pupils fall behind, miss deadlines and are not awarded a grade. Parents need to monitor. Does "no homework this week" really mean "carry on with coursework?"
AS, A2
In 2001 for the first time, yr12 students sat several AS modular exams in each of 5/6 chosen subjects amidst much confusion and student/teacher pressure. The number of subjects has been reduced to 3/4 and the number of modular exams has also been reduced. A levels will continue to be awarded from the results of yr12(AS) and yr13(A2) exams.
